Unfortunately, I'm not that popular

This is one of those moments where I wish I had one of those blogs with really high readership, so I could tell you all that I think I may have broken my toe, and someone would kindly tell me whether in fact it seems so and what I need to do about it - thereby saving myself from waiting hours for a return call from the doctor on call at the Evil HMO. But alas, I am not one of those bloggers and this is not one of those blogs.

(Though if anyone wants to weigh in: I stubbed my big toe yesterday and it hurt like the dickens, whatever that means, and was sore to walk on, but bearable. Today it's worse, with a black and blue spot - not the whole toe - and somewhat swollen. Currently I have it taped to the next toe - the index finger of toes, I guess - and that's helping a bit with the walking. Am already planning to skip the walking portion of playgroup, sadly as I could use the exercise, but trying to decide if I need to go in to get it looked at/x-rayed or if I'm already doing what needs doing.)

  1. Well, I don't know much about toes, but it sure sounds broken to me. Or, at the very least, needs medical treatment.

My guess? If you had hundreds of people reading this blog, all of their responses would sound a lot like mine. And heck, in the IF world, all of us are very big on seeing a doctor for the smallest little thing. Do it yourself? Not on your life!

  2. I have no idea, but I hope you feel better soon.

  3. I even asked H. and he said he doesn't know anything about broken toes. We're both under the impression that there's no much you can do even if the x-ray shows a break, but he's not offering that as a medical opinion.

I'm pretty sure I broke my "index" toe in high school (stayed black and blue and swollen for about two weeks), and I just taped it and tried to stay off of it. IF yours were a smaller toe, I'd say don't bother getting it checked out, but I wonder if it's different with your big toe?

    Poor, Cass!

  4. Okay, I know nothing about broken toes, either, but if the black and blue is under the toenail, you might think about poking a hole in the toenail. It sounds horrible and disgusting, but it helps the pain so much. Heat up a needle or a pin on the stove and hold the point against the toenail above the black and blue area. It will burn through on its own. I did this in March - it bled through the hole for a week, but the massive pain was gone almost immediately. Of course, this is no help whatsoever if the toenail is not involved... Anyway, good luck!

  5. Oh sweetie, I'm sorry. That just stinks.

I'm with Bittermama--when I broke a little toe, tape helped immensely, but not sure what happens if it's the big toe. Is there a nureseline you could call?

(Oh, and no disrespect intended, but amazedlife's suggestion scares the bejeezus out of me!)

  6. Okay, not sure if this is helpful, especially as you may have resolved this hours ago... When I was in 4th grade I broke my big toe. There was little to be done other than taping it to the next toe, and keeping off it, which it sounds like you're already doing. They said with toes they didn't do casts or anything other than tape. Of course, that was like 20 -- oops, I guess I mean 30 -- years ago, and I was young, so maybe things have changed or differ for grown-ups. Whatever it is, I hope it feels better really soon.

  7. Like many of these other folks, not a medical doctor or even experienced with broken toes; however, my friend did break her toe and that's all they did...tape it to the one next to it and give her a little shoe to wear.

  8. None of us know, of course, but my guess is that it's horribly bruised rather than broken. Either way, as others have said, they won't do much other than tape it up. But if you can find a babysitter, might be worth getting it checked out? You might get some good drugs out of it...

  9. Youch!

I doubt they'll do much other than tape it, but I'd go to the doctor anyway. I'm a PITA that way.
